VIN data is sent from your browser to NHTSA to decode. NICB and the recall checker are independent websites where you may need to enter the VIN again. These tools do not guarantee a clean vehicle history. Verify the title, obtain supporting documents, and arrange an independent inspection.
Know Exactly What's Included
Both can be useful, but they answer different questions. Here is what this website actually offers today.
$0 / public tools
Start here for manufacturer specifications and separately available official records.
Provider-priced
A separately licensed report may offer broader records, depending on the provider and vehicle.
Plans are available for enquiry; checkout and report fulfilment are not yet enabled. The free decoder does not reveal ownership, accident or maintenance history. NHTSA and NICB are independent services and do not endorse this website.

Locate Your Vehicle's VIN
Most modern vehicles show the VIN in at least one of these locations. Match the number on your car to its paperwork.
Stand outside the car and look through the lower driver-side corner of the windshield.
Open the driver's door and look for the manufacturer label on the door frame or pillar.
Check the vehicle registration, insurance documents or title paperwork for the same VIN.
Buying tip: If the VIN on the vehicle does not match the documents, investigate before paying. NHTSA's VIN guidance

Frequently Asked Questions
Understand what a VIN can reveal, what's free, and why your next step should always include an inspection.
Still have a question?A VIN is a vehicle identification number. Modern standardized vehicles use a consistent VIN format, while older vehicles may have shorter chassis numbers. Look at the lower driver-side windshield, the driver-side door-jamb label, or the vehicle's registration paperwork. See the visual guide.
Yes. The embedded VIN decoder requests basic manufacturer-reported vehicle information from NHTSA's public vPIC API at no charge. It does not include a complete history of accidents, ownership, titles or servicing.
NICB VINCheck offers a free, limited lookup of theft and salvage/flood records reported by participating insurance companies. Its database is not complete and a clear result does not guarantee the vehicle is safe. Full accident-history reports generally require additional licensed data sources.
Depending on the provider, geography and available records, it may include title events, reported accidents, ownership-related events, mileage and service entries. The comprehensive reports shown in our sample are illustrative; they are not currently sold through this website.
Check the identifier against the dashboard, door label or documents, including its length and characters. Some vehicles, especially those outside U.S.-market coverage, have limited NHTSA decoding data. Try the official NHTSA VIN decoder and verify the physical VIN with the manufacturer.
No. Important events may never have been reported. Verify the title and VIN, review maintenance documentation, check open recalls, and arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection.
This static demo sends VINs from your browser to the NHTSA API for decoding; it does not operate a server-side VIN history database or payment system. Hosting and third-party services may process technical information under their own policies. Read our policies.
Research beyond the surface
Before purchasing a used vehicle, compare its identification marks with the title and registration, examine reported incidents and mileage, and ask for inspection and service evidence. Our guides explain the questions worth asking while keeping public VIN decoding separate from paid historical records.
Look for title brands such as salvage, rebuilt or flood where available. Ask whether the car served as a rental, fleet or commercial vehicle. Available information can differ across regions and data sources.
Compare dated mileage observations against service invoices, inspection documents and any available historical records. Unexpected gaps or decreasing readings deserve follow-up.
Ask about repairs, water intrusion and prior structural damage. Check manufacturer recall information and arrange an independent mechanical inspection, even when the available report is clear.
Transparent plan comparison
Reference prices and advertised turnaround times; report fulfilment and checkout are not yet connected on this site.

Policies & Trust
Read how the free tools process information, the limitations of public records, and the conditions for using this site.
These documents describe this free demonstration site. Add your real business identity, hosting details and verified contact information, then obtain legal review before commercial launch.
This Privacy Policy explains how this BEST CARFAX website demonstration processes information while presenting free third-party vehicle-check tools. The operator's registered legal name, physical address and official privacy contact must be completed before production launch. See the Contact section for currently configured support details.
When you submit a VIN for a free decode, your browser sends the VIN directly to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) public vehicle API. NHTSA supplies vehicle identification data. This WordPress theme does not create a database log of VIN searches. Hosting infrastructure may maintain ordinary access and security logs. NHTSA and your hosting provider may process technical information under their own privacy practices.
The contact form can collect your name, email address, inquiry topic, optional VIN and message. Until the website administrator configures a verified support email and enables WordPress contact delivery, the form remains in preview mode and does not transmit inquiries. When enabled, the WordPress server emails inquiries to the configured recipient; the email recipient and hosting provider may retain the message according to their own policies. Do not include payment card numbers, passwords, identity documents or other sensitive information in your message.
Links to NICB VINCheck, NHTSA recall searches and other external sites take you to independent services. You may need to enter your VIN again. Their websites' privacy policies, security controls and data-handling practices are separate from this website's policies.
Questions about a report plan can include an optional vehicle identifier. Please do not submit card information; this site does not provide payment processing. If paid order processing is added later, the policy must be updated to identify the payment provider and relevant data processing.
The theme does not itself set advertising cookies, run analytics scripts or process payments. WordPress may set session or authentication cookies for logged-in editors, and the host may record access/security logs. Additional installed plugins, analytics, cookies or checkout features would require review and a policy update and, where required, appropriate notices or consent controls.
The WordPress theme does not intentionally log VIN submissions. If the WordPress contact form is enabled, inquiries may be delivered to and stored within the configured support inbox. The operator must define retention periods, access controls, deletion procedures and applicable privacy rights before launching commercially. Use HTTPS and reasonable security protections on any production deployment; no online transmission can be guaranteed entirely secure.
To ask about access, correction or deletion of information collected by a future configured contact system, use the verified business contact details provided on the live website. Rights and response requirements differ by jurisdiction. Requests concerning data submitted directly to NHTSA or NICB should be directed to the relevant service.
This policy may change when website operations, data providers, hosting or paid features change. A revised version should show an updated effective date and explain material changes where required by law.
By using BEST CARFAX, you agree to use the site responsibly and acknowledge that it currently offers informational content, free public VIN decoding and links to independent vehicle-check services. These Terms do not create a paid vehicle-history subscription or authorize the purchase of any commercial report through this demonstration website.
Submitted VINs are used to request manufacturer-reported specifications from the NHTSA vPIC public API. Results may be incomplete, unavailable, delayed or incorrect, especially for unsupported or non-U.S.-market vehicles. A VIN decode is not proof of title condition, ownership, accident history, mileage accuracy or the absence of recalls.
Silver, Gold, and Platinum plans are displayed for comparison and enquiry only. Listed prices and turnaround times are subject to provider confirmation. No paid report service, account creation or checkout is currently operating here.
NICB VINCheck and NHTSA Recalls are independently operated tools. Their eligibility criteria, coverage, usage limits and terms apply. BEST CARFAX does not control their availability, results or information quality and does not represent that they are affiliated with or endorse BEST CARFAX.
Do not treat a missing result or a clean free check as proof of a vehicle's condition. Inspect the VIN on the actual vehicle, verify ownership and title documentation, request supporting service records and obtain an independent professional inspection before any purchase.
Do not use the site for unlawful conduct, automated abuse of public databases, impersonation, malicious interference, resale of third-party data contrary to provider terms, or unauthorized attempts to access its underlying systems.
The website and its free features are offered on an as-available basis. To the extent permitted by applicable law, no guarantee is made of uninterrupted access or complete, accurate, current vehicle information. Nothing in these terms excludes rights or liabilities that cannot lawfully be excluded.
Website layouts, original text and imagery are provided for use by the website operator, subject to applicable rights. Names and marks of CARFAX, NHTSA, NICB and other entities belong to their respective owners; references to those entities do not imply sponsorship or affiliation. Confirm rights to the BEST CARFAX brand name before commercial use.
Features and terms may be revised. A legally operating company must publish its registered identity, jurisdiction and verified contact information before commercial launch. Contact links in the current demonstration are placeholders until configured.
The currently implemented NHTSA VIN decoding feature is free. BEST CARFAX does not collect payment for this feature, sell paid reports or accept orders through this version of the site. Therefore there is no purchase price to refund for these free checks.
If you choose to leave this website and buy a report or service from an independent third-party provider, the transaction is between you and that provider. Its own payment and refund policy applies; BEST CARFAX cannot issue refunds for those transactions.
The current Silver ($47.99), Gold ($68.99), and Platinum ($89.99) amounts are reference plan prices, not an offer for immediate checkout. The stated delivery windows and feature lists require confirmation from the actual report provider. No payment is collected by this WordPress site at present.
Before any paid report, subscription or checkout is enabled, the website operator must display the price, included coverage, delivery method, cancellation procedures, eligibility and timing of refunds, and a clear support contact. Paid-service terms must be provided and accepted before purchase. No specific paid-service refund entitlement is promised by this free-site policy.
No payment processor is connected to this demonstration. If payment functionality is added in the future and an unexpected charge occurs, the operator must provide a clear way to report it, investigate promptly and comply with applicable payment and consumer-protection laws.
Refund inquiries can only be handled once the site's operator has supplied an official business support channel. Do not send card numbers or other sensitive financial details through the contact form.
The embedded free VIN decoder uses the official NHTSA vPIC API to show manufacturer-reported vehicle identification and specifications when available, such as make, model, model year, vehicle type and production information. Some fields may be missing or inaccurate. It is not a vehicle-history report.
The linked free National Insurance Crime Bureau VINCheck service can identify certain participating-insurer records of unrecovered theft and salvage or flood-related total loss. NICB limits searches to five per IP address in a 24-hour period. It excludes nonparticipating insurer records and is not a comprehensive report. A no-record result is not proof that a vehicle is free of problems.
The NHTSA recall lookup can provide certain unrepaired safety recalls for eligible vehicles. It may not show completed recall repairs, some recent recalls, certain older recalls or vehicles not covered by that search. Always confirm with a manufacturer or authorized dealer when appropriate.
The current website does not fetch insurance claims, nationwide title records, full accident histories, owner identities, service visits, odometer rollbacks or all flood/auction records. Those records may require a separately licensed provider and may still be incomplete. The sample report is illustrative, not a live result.
NHTSA vPIC chiefly covers vehicles manufactured for U.S. sale/import and vehicle model years 1981 onward. Coverage outside that scope can be limited. Never rely on one free check: confirm the physical VIN, documents and seller claims, and arrange an independent mechanical inspection.
NHTSA vPIC and NHTSA Recalls are U.S. government resources; NICB VINCheck is a service of the National Insurance Crime Bureau. Each is accessed independently and retains control of its content and conditions. No affiliation or endorsement is claimed.
